Recent Project
A homeowner in Livonia, Michigan recently reached out after their garage door suddenly stopped working. The door would only lift a few inches before stopping, and the homeowner mentioned hearing a loud snapping sound the night before. After a quick inspection, the issue was immediately clear—a broken torsion spring, one of the most common reasons a garage door fails to open properly.
Garage door springs are responsible for counterbalancing the weight of the door. When they’re functioning correctly, the door can open smoothly with minimal effort from the opener. Once a spring breaks, however, the door becomes extremely heavy and can place significant strain on the opener and other hardware.
Diagnosing the Issue
During the inspection, our technician confirmed that one of the torsion springs mounted above the door had completely separated. This type of break usually occurs after years of normal use as the metal fatigues from thousands of open-and-close cycles. The rest of the system—including the cables, rollers, and track alignment—was carefully checked to ensure no additional damage occurred when the spring failed.
The Repair
To restore proper balance and prevent another failure in the near future, we replaced both torsion springs with a new matched set of high-quality replacement springs. Replacing springs as a pair helps keep the door operating evenly and extends the life of the entire system.
The repair included safely removing the damaged springs, installing the new ones, and carefully adjusting the tension so the door opened and closed smoothly. Once complete, the system was tested to ensure proper balance and reliable operation.
Before & After
The before photos show the broken spring and the door stuck partially open due to the imbalance. In the after photos, the new springs are installed and the garage door is operating smoothly again.
With the new springs in place, the homeowner’s garage door is now functioning safely and reliably.
